Its Spring!

Its Spring!

And that means that your reticulation can be switched back on. We have had a few warmer days lately and there are plenty more to come.

While you don’t need to turn your retic on right away, be sure to check your retic controller now so that its good to go when the hot weather arrives.

And if you have a problem then call me and I will get there to help you out

Irritrol Kwikdial Reset

If you’ve got one of these then you’d probably know that when the power goes off it resets to start at 5.00am every day of the week for 10 mins/station.

Not very helpful at all…

So if you’re taking off on extended holidays and want to be wise with water then this may not be the controller you choose. A controller with a battery back up that only retains the times set is what you are really after.

We recommend the Hunter X Core as the best value and quality

Checked Your Controller?

Its still winter, but very soon we will be able to switch the retic back on and chances are you may discover that your controller has died over the break.

Spring is the time the rush begins so why not check your controller’s status now and call us to replace the old one before the warm weather begins.

We supply and install top quality controllers at excellent prices all over the metro area.

Winter – The Control Box Killer

Its very common over winter for control boxes to die, either because the door has been left open and rain has affected the circuitry or because of power spikes.

So come Spring when its time to turn the retic back on you find yourself with a dead box.

Unfortunately nothing can be done for boxes affected by a power spike, but the other situation of weather damage is completely avoidable. Always keep the door on your controller closed and you shouldn’t have any problems.

We can always check for the tell tale burn signs of a power spike by removing the circuit board. Below are two boards side by side – one brand new and one damaged by a power spike – you can see the brown stain where the capacitor exploded.

If you happen to check your controller and discover it is doing weird things or just not doing anything then give me a call. I can usually diagnose and quote over the phone and get there fast to replace it for you.

Hunter X Core Irrigation Controller Repairs

People often ask me if they can have a controller repaired and almost without exception the answer is no – if they are faulty then they are a throwaway.

Its not that its impossible, but once you have paid for a call out to remove the controller ($75+ GST) and paid a technician to fault find (around $150) and then paid for it to be reinstalled ($75+GST) you’re up to $300.00 and there is no warranty. With a new controller around $385 it just doesn’t make sense. (Sadly because I’d rather recycle than create more junk.)

Recently someone asked about repairs to a Hunter X Core and then did their own tear down to see if they could solve the ‘sticky switch’ problem.

This is the Youtube video they made of their experience. It shows that if you can buy a switch from Hunter then the process is possible, but having disassembled a box myself previously out of curiosity I can tell you it is fiddly and easy to damage stuff.

Converting From Community Bore to Mains in ‘The Green’, Butler

If you live in The Green Estate in Butler then you will probably have experienced the frustration most people do at not being able to control your own reticulation.

You can only run tests at short times on a Saturday morning and no one can service your retic except for the designated company who charge an arm and a leg.

This week I did my first conversion job in that area. I’m surprised I haven’t done more as I know the frustration people feel. This one was a direct change over which involved:

  • a cut in by a plumber
  • a new controller to replace the existing ‘locked’ version
  • re-routing pipe and wiring to suit

Its all done now and working perfectly.

You can also have the option of running the two systems side by side with manual valves to switch from one to the other, so that if your bore goes down (as has happened) then you simply switch to mains and keep watering your lawn. Or if you wish to give your lawn more water than the 20 minutes you get from the bore then you can DIY and ensure your lawn stays green.

The run times for MP rotators can be seen below and generally speaking you need to allow close to an hour to apply 10mls of water rather than just 20 minutes.

If you’d like a quote on either changing to mains supply water or making your retic a dual system then give me a call on 0400044236

Hydrawise Start Delays

I like techy gadgets and I’m usually the first one to buy new technology so the Hydrawise had some real appeal.

However the one feature that really lets it down is the time delay between turning a station on and it actually operating.

When you’re servicing sprinklers having to wait for one minute just for the water to come on means time wasted and a half hour job can become an hour. Hydrawise has sold out to Hunter now, so here’s hoping Hunter can do something to make the controller operate more efficiently.

Aside from this one problem its a good controller.
